Did the 74 duster come with 225 or 198 origionally???

For your particular car, Check the VIN. If the 5th digit is a B, it came with a 198....if the 5th digit is a C, it's a 225.

I understand why they had the 170 and the 225 but never knew why the 198 ?
Even in the 70's when I was in my early 20's and starting out as a mechanic. I thought they were all 225's. Anybody know "The rest of the story"??

My understanding is the 198 was made for mileage. Since adding smog requirements in the early 70's the 170 didn't have power to do the job.

The 198s stroke at 3.64 was 1/2 way between the 3.12 of the 170 and the 4.125 of the 225.

That's most of it, but there's more. Since the 198 uses the same block as the 225, Mopar could cut costs and simplify manufacturing. To get the piston back towards the top of the block for good compression, the 198 has the longest rods of any /6.
