Is there any difference between big block and small block 727 converters?

No, as long as it is not a lock up going into a non lock up trans.

Well not as long as they are 67 and earlier or 68 and later. The early ones used 18 spline input shaft and the laters use 24 spline. And as mentioned above the lock up and non losk up converters do not interchange. One more fact they made weighted and non weighted converters for external or internally balanced engines, so it's not a simple yes or no answer.
