So finally found a proper dipstick and it came with a short tube. My current 225 has a much longer tube and a toyota oil dipstick. 1966 dart 270
The dipstick I got from the junkyard (off a 65 dart slant) has the old yellow handle, kinda slants down, real big.
I removed the long tube, put in the short tube and correct dipstick, it is now reading a little too full? I am hoping one of you might measure the length of your small tube from the engine. Then maybe I can cut down the long tube I have to get it to read properly.
thanks. how far does tube extend out of engine block? and while you are at it, what is the length of your dipstick.

please forgive the potential johnson jokes that may ensue from this post.

There are many different-length dipsticks and tubes for Slant-6 engines. Depends on year, type of oil pan (which depends on type of vehicle) and equipment (especially on later cars where some needed longer tubes and sticks to remain accessible despite air conditioning or other underhood components).

To make a random dipstick read properly, change the oil and filter—use the big filter, Wix 51515 for example—put exactly five quarts of oil in the engine, run it for a few minutes to fill up the filter, park it on level flat ground, walk away for 20 minutes to let the oil drain down, then pull the dipstick, wipe it, put it back in, pull it out, and now your oil on the stick is where your new FULL mark should be, so drill a hole there.

If both tubes use the same diameter dip stick and you want to modify the long tube and it reads high with the short tube and you have the proper amount of oil in it you can simply put it on level ground the check the oil and measure from the oil mark to the mark you want it to read at then cut the long tube so it is exactly that much longer than the short one .

Why not do an oil change with the correct filter and 5 quarts, start it up to fill/prime the filter and engine, then mark on the stick where the oil level is. The stock slant should be full with 5 quarts of oil and the proper filter...
