hey alll was just pondering this. never really knew what triple black meant exactly but my scamp was from the factory with black paint, black interior and black vinyl roof, does this make it a "triple black?" and if so is that rare or something or not so much? its orange right now

You are correct. I believe that a "triple black" was a rare option indeed especially if it can be proven. I say option cause a triple black was not normally built. Convertible's also fall into the same catagory. Can't say how it affects your scamp, but generally these cars are worth a little more if they retain the original colors. If only cause some people (like me) are partial to black.

You didn't mention the year of your car but black or double black if you will or the much rarer triple black cars are unusual for car that were not luxury or full size cars like the imperials for example. during the muscle car years the high impact colors were everywhere and crossed over to regular everyday cars. I was a kid during those days and my mother had a Studebaker. When she wanted a new car she bought a 65 mustang in burgundy. Baker was black. My parents grew up when most cars were black. My dad's new 66 Pontiac Bonneville was a nice light yellow. The 72 Duster 340 that I am restoring is a factory black car. I know it's a rare color for a Duster because i was a teenager when these cars were new. It was the least color ordered, .9 percent that year. I haven't check other years but I would guess that small cars, dusters, darts, etc. black, would be the lowest percent ordered. I would say that a triple black scamp would be a little rare, how rare or whether it would add a price premium is subject for debate.

damn my old man memory! lol. the 72 Duster in black was 1.6 percent of those built. The lowest color ordered. This is from the Hamtramck Historical website. Used without permission, hope its ok....

I knew black was uncommon in Duster's,but didn't know it was the least common...mine was originally black with white interior and white stripe.Too bad I don't have the fender tag or buildsheet, but under the hood and a few other places are still black.I talked to the guy who painted it red and he still has the fender tag,but could never get him to find the tag and give it to me :banghead:

cool chart,...got any for 73 and 74 dusters?

I will look on the website and see if there is one for those years. It is listed under the next year. this chart would have been used for salesmen in 1973 to show what colors people ordered in 72

Great,...I think I've only seen one or two double black Dusters up here,....I was curious how many in Silver like my 73,....my 74 is green,....not so rare...

You know, I just plain like black car. All muscle car Cudas, Road runners, and any muscle a-bodies, factory black is always going to be rare. Colors were bright then. Most people didn't want black cars, their parents and grandparents drove black cars! As far as your car is concerned if it is a factory black car, it is rare in color. If you perfer it green,or red or yellow it's your car brother, paint it what you want. Now, as far as the guy who won't give the fender tag back, I will grab a few cans of whoop a@* and meet you there...lol

I almost did at a show one time, but he was a little older and I didn't think it would be good form.I chased it for 3 years before I gave up.I talked to a friend of his last year but couldn't get any leads and now I'm in TX instead of GA so I'll probably never get it.It was supposed to be part of the deal, part of the reason I bought the car was because it was a TX9 car.

I always thought triple black was black int, black ext.,black roof.

I guess mine was an Oreo.

You could call that a triple black car, and it works, and a damn nice one at that!

Ok, here you go. I can't make out the tag codes, but if you are saying that this car is coded with Black paint, black interior, black top and also black stripe then I would say this car is a very rare color combo and may be one of only several made that year. I am not sure I know enough about this model and year to comment, but in my never to be humble opinion let play this out like this. how many of us car guys have bought a car and after talking to the salesmen, we knew in two minutes the guy didn't know d@#k about cars. Somebody wanted a black Dart and the salesmen had no idea that most salesmen might check the stripe delete box because the customer didn't want a white stripe and without the right boxes checked off, the factory build the car the way the order sheet asked for it to be built. Maybe this model all had stripes unless you delete it. Black stripe was not something that would make bells and whistles go off at the factory. I am sure you have seen rare color combo before in articles that the factory call the dealership to verify if it was correct. 1970 fm3 Charger rt 440 6 bbl. that was in Mopar Collector's guide several years back is a good example. like i said early, i don't know enough about this model, maybe like a super bee, you have to enter "stripe delete" to not get the stripe, but if you did on the 68 bee, you would still get the round super bee on the rear quarter panel. No matter how this car got built like this, I would have jumped on this one with both feet. If it was a slant six car, it wolud be worth a full resto. You could go to the Mopar nats for years and I bet you will never see another one like it.

triple black can mean a few different things.

black vinyl top, interior, and paint.
black stripe, interior, and paint.
and if you had black paint with black vinyl top, black stripe, and black interior. It would be a quad black car.

I also have a factory black on black A-body.

I added the blue stripe
