Door Latch Problem

In my Son's 66 Valiant the door latch for the drivers door stopped working from the outside. I pulled the interior panel, and noticed that everything inside the door seems to be hooked up and working. I examined the latch and discovered that when you push the button on the door handle, the cogged latch wheel does not roll freely backward to release the latch.

Any experience or suggestions with this? Thanks!

I would start by pulling the latch and giving it a good cleaning and lube it up. If that doesn't work you may want to look for a replacement.

I had same problem on 60 Valiant. Turned out to be a broken ratchet dog lifting arm on the latch mechanism. Had to replace the latch. Was a fairly easy install. Had more problem getting inside door panel back on. Have attached a picture with highlighted broken part.
