Duster 4 speed floor - what is this piece for

My other car doesn't have this loop thing on top of the tunnel. what is it for, and do I really need it. I used floor pieces from a column mount automatic to fix the 4-speed floor. I didn't even notice this loop until I was looking at some old pictures taken during disassembly.

I believe that bracket keeps the seat from moving too far forward, so the seat doesn't get in the way of shifting.....:burnout:
 
That probably explains it, as it has a bench seat. I guess that future drivers will have to be taller than 5'8"", as I am not going to weld anything more to that floor, since the bottom and the topside of the floor have already been painted. We have come a long way from the picture above to the picture below:

I have always wondered what that was for too. My dad's cuda has the same loop and its a factory bucket seat car A56 69 cuda.
