If a fill up is done until the pump shuts off automatically, how full is it? Is the gas all the way up the filler tube?
On a related issue, how do automatic shut offs work? I've searched the net some without finding the answer.
Thanks,
C

Well with my Dart I have to be carful. The pump does not shut off till gas is shooting out at me. I think with older cars it does fill the tank all the way and some if not all of the filler tube. But on newer cars the filler tube goes down in to the tank and that nakes it to where it will shut off before the tank is full. There is a way around that though. If you open the tank up and cut that tube off flush with the top of the tank you then can fill it up all the way.

I do not know how the shut off thing works. Prussure valve mabby?

Thanks for the replies.
If it fills the tank until it is at the top of the filler tube (which the auto shut-off reads like it does also), then a vented gas cap may not be the best way to go to vent the tank? I would hate for gas to run down the side of the car.

The auto shut-off was interesting. I will be looking at the nozzle the next time I gas up! The only problem I have with the article is that if gas is going in full bore and it shuts off when gas essentially hits the nozzle, seems like it has to shut off sooner...
