The gas station is just around the corner. I guess it usually doesn't happen very often that you put gas in your car (at night) and park it immediately.

For dirt daubers, I cut a two inch circle of window screen, then fold the edges up around a vent and a small zip tie.
I agree. They had already been there when I bought that project!!!
I rather get stung by red and black wasps, and some hornets and maybe some yellow jackets, than deal with dirt daubbers!!!!
I bought a 71 Charger once, and I swear I got a 5 gal. bucket full of dirt daubber nests out oif that sucker!
Happen to me . Filled tank before winter . No problem until we had some weird weather change got an 85 degree day and gas overflowed .

Remember that the filler neck is almost horizontal, and anything filled near the top of the tank has a pretty easy escape when given a little push from a plugged vent.

When I was a kid we had a 5 gallon metal gas can with a snap type vent on the top that we used for the boat and it was on the beach in the sun when I went to fuel up the boat I opened the vent and got immediately squirted in the eye with gas under pressure had to jump in the lake and flush my eye out bad news and hard lesson to learn horrified my grandfather who saw the whole thing Luckly I can still see 50 years later

About 5 years ago, a similar but gut-churning incident happened to mine. *Nearly* full tank & parked in a grass field at our club picnic, car was sloped to the drivers side. My theory is that this created an air pocket on the passenger side of tank, which expanded sitting in the heat & pushed fuel out of filler neck.
Came to discover that a previous owner drilled a small vent hole in the neck flange, otherwise it would've safely pushed out of the vent tube as designed

I think it's base/clear coat enamel. Car was done by an unknown previous owner, probably at least 15 years ago.
Someone said the gas got under the paint around the filler neck. My guess it was seeping out for a good hour or so.

Quite a few Early A's had that racing stripe. Iirc the vent tube is visible in the trunk, follow up the filler and it loops out the top to a drip tube that goes down under the trunk floor. I have to fill up with the pump nozzle inverted her in CA as we have some vapor lock nozzles that wont pump unless the seal is compressed. I have ot cheat and pull the collar up and fill. My 57 Ford had behind the plate filler and a few times I left a trail out the back when I didnt put the cap back on.

This happened to my '66 Dart, too. Doesn't take much expansion when the filler neck is nearly horizontal.
