Got a question - I'm working on my son's 72 Duster and the rear frame rails (approx last 8-10 inches) where the leaf spring boxes attach are rusted out. We have already cut out the whole trunk pan and plan on mini-tubbing and doing the rear leaf spring relocation.

The cross member area is in pretty bad shape also,

I was thinking of gutting and removing the spring mounts and replacing the cross member with either 2x3 or 2x4 box tubing (chassis tubing)

also using this tubing and splicing in new frame rails with gussets and cross members where the tank goes. I would tie the new rails approx 16-20" to the existing frame rails.

What size chassis tubing do you think I should use 2x3 or 2x4

Original trunk floor will be replace with flat metal and accomodate a fuel cell.

thanks,
Nick
