Dying at idle?!?

makes sense.i have heard that term "vapour lock" a lot.
what is actually happening..fuel boiling and evaporating?
wouldn't cranking re-fill the carb quite quickly?

Vapor lock sucks
The motor cranks and it turns on while the key is on the on position but as soon as you let go the car turns off.

Get a carburetor base plate that doesn't transfer a lot of heat
Reroute your gas lines away from heat and cover them

More times than none this is also an ignition issue though.

Yes on the gas turning from liquid to vapor... or vapour up there.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The vapor can make it where the fuel pump won't be able to get re-primed. (It may also mess up the outlet check valve action on the output side; been cipherin' on that one...) The first time I recall this was riding with my dad in his brand new '67 Polara wagon in summer in Southside VA on a hot day. Stopped for a break at a small rural store and the car would not re-start for 20-30 minutes, after it had cooled off.
