I have a 73 340 block i bought complete. It is at the machine shop and when i got it 1 of the cylinders had water sitting in it for a while. The cylinder was at std bore it is now bored all the way to .40 over. There are still very little pits in the cylinder wall. Should I go ahead and sleeve it? What are some of the pros and cons to sleeving? How long should it last?

Thanks for the help.

How big are the pits and where are they located, are they near the bottom of the piston travel or towards the top?

If they are near the top, and are pretty big you might consider sleeving it. If they are towards the bottom I wouldn't worry too much, just run it. I built a 440 that had that problem with 2-3 random pits maybe as big as pin heads in the bore about half way down at .030 over. It ran like a champ. I doubt it will make much difference, unless you are building an all out race motor or something like that.

Have you asked the machinist about their opinion on this problem ?

Pit's suck. If it was more than one hole, I'd say sonic it and go bigger. But with one hole, make sure the shop can do a sleeve properly, and then have it done.

You can sleeve it with no problems. Around me we have an Orielly's machine shop in Springfield and they can do that for you for $60 to $75 per hole.

I decided to have him sleeve it. The pits were at the top and at .40 over it was still pretty good size. He is going to sleeve it and then all cylinders will be at .30 over.

thanks for all the input.
