Has anybody every installed a v8 sb with headers on it in a 68 Val ? From the top ?

The headers need to be laid into the engine compartment and held in place with zip ties or something while the engine is being lowered in.

best way to do it with a cheap set of headers that have the steering ran through the tubes on driver side.

+1. Or install it from the bottom

Drop the headers in and tie them up to the side (Or at least do the left side header - the right side headers usually can be wormed in from below after the engine is set down in the mounts.

Here are pictures of how we pulled the engine out of our son's Challenger, but the process is the same...

Start out by lifting vertically to get it clear of the motor mounts:

Now that you are at the top of the trans tunnel, pull if forward to the radiator support:

Lift some more vertically:

Now tilt it to get it over the radiator support.

Here's the tight spot:

And it's out!

Drop the engine in with the headers tied to the side.

Then put the trans mount and cross member in.

Connect the driveshaft.

then move up and get the starter and left exhaust/header in place. Keep both loose until you get them both in place as you may need to jog each a bit until you find how to get them both in and secure...

then connect the right exhaust.

Then secure the engine/motor mounts.

Install radiator and secure trans lines.

Install alt, cooling fan, p/s and all belts.

Install distributor.

Install carb and throttle brackets and linkages...

Connect fuel line.

Connect heater hoses.

Install coil and all ignition wires and spark plugs (if the plugs are not already in).

Don't forget the ignition coil and any other small parts that I may have left out...
