Ive always had trouble installing the filler neck into the rubber grommet on the fuel tank. In the past ive tried dish soap, bearing grease, glass cleaner, lube spray. Anyone have some tricks ? Thanks

Try and find a grommet that isn't as hard as some plastic like the many that are sold today. I have some I kept from the 70's. They are more pliable.

I have use a heat gun to soften hard grommets with success using Dawn dish liquid.

Yup! I was struggling with doing the same thing. My solution?
I took out the filler tube and sanded down the area the grommett slides over to a very smooth finish.
Used some white grease and it went in perfectly. Also easier to manouver when aligning with gas door opening.

What year?
What car?

Some Install from inside the trunk.

Some from outside.

When I had to replace mine (67 Dart) I used a but of vasoline on the tube and gasket, got the tank in about the right place, slightly down on the passanger side, slid all the seals on the tube that can't be installed after, wiggled and twisted the tube into the tank. Installed the tank losely and fit the tube to the quarter. Then losely fit the trunk seal to the floor pan, then sinched up the tank and the other screws etc.

Its a 71 demon
So your's installs from the outside of the quarter. Right?

I think same process, keep everything loose, clean the tube so no catch points, lube gasket, insert, tighten.

no the filler neck screws on from the inside of the quarter

Installed 2 stainless tanks from Van's, never had to do anything special.

If you have a filler neck with the vent connection AKA pre EVAP emissions, it goes in from the outside. If you have a car WITH evap, it goes in from the inside of the trunk. 71 may be an "iffy" year
