I have to fiddle with both sides to get the seat belts out far enough to latch, they “catch/latch” very easily.
If you hand feed them all the way in and hold your tongue just right they come out smoothly, but usually only after fussing and fiddling for a few minutes. What’s the “fix”?

Take them out and give the mech a good cleaning. Also is the webbing soft and supple or full of chocolate shake ?

IIRC no lube apon reassembly.

As for latching when you pull then out, might be a missing spring OR it might be by design. Some belts have an Inertial catch.

Some of the info in related youtube videos might help. All of them have a safety inside that is supposed to stop the belt when the belt leaves the spool fast, as in accident. Over time they get to where we can't pull the belt out slow enough to prevent the stopping. They do collect lint and hair. A good cleaning may be all it needs.
