Sorry for the long delay, but I just thought of something. If you are drilling out the spot welds, they make drill bit extensions that would allow you to get in from above or below without having to get your drill all the way in there. I don't think you can get much more than a 1/4 bit in the smaller ones, and the big 1/2 ones are pretty expensive.
