what are you guys using? Flywheels on the market? Tranny is Toyota R154 which uses the stock SB flywheel diameter (Dakota V6 I guess too).

Currently I try to use my old one from the 340. I did weld the bolt circle and have the new boltcircle drilled to match the 6.1 crank. But I'm pretty sure that balancing is required and this is the expensive part of the job. Went to 2 shops and both want nearly 400 USD ... :-(
 
Yeah, I wouldn't mess around with the balance on the flywheel. That's a lot of metal that has to be balanced perfectly. Would the 340 fllywheel even work with that trans?

Sounds like the new V6 flywheel would be the way to go.
 
somebody here had problems with a bad balanced pressure plate. That's why I'm a bit concerned....

But if I don't find a local solution I try the "try and error" way.

What a new V6 flywheel? What's the diameter or how many teeth? Means is it it the same size like the old SB wheel with the HEMI boltcircle?

That's the one I bought, now considering selling and buying the aluminum one. Apparently a lower rotating mass is good for the tko600 lifespan. I'm still a couple months off needing it anyway.

Mopar manufactured the one you listed and the sister aluminum one for guys like us. Uses a 10.5" clutch, and a standard Mopar starter.
 
maybe you can sell me the one you currently running when you don't use it anymore? ;-)

But what I don't understand is what does the rotating mass has to do with the tranny lifespan? Is it because of the massive torque? And the lighter flywheel is compensating it? Are you driving your car already?
 
No, I'm not driving the car yet. I'm sure the steel one would be fine, but when discussing the torque limits of the transmission with a tko600 specialist, he told me that the guys running 9.0's @150 have paid special attention to the weight of the flywheel and clutch. We're talking high rpm launches, and his effort is to reduce the initial hit that the gears feel. Sure, I won't be running anywhere near that fast, but I figure why not since I'll be road racing the car.

that makes sense. But here in germany I'd prefer to sacrifice the toyota tranny. But it is rated with up to 600nm w/o any problem (that's what i've been told).

so steel for torque and quick & hard launches and alu to reach fast high rpms... right?

General consensus is steel is better for drag racing launches and street driving, and aluminum is better for road racing applications. Some will argue alum for drag racing, but pretty much everyone agrees steel for ease of driving on the street.
 
my car won't be a high reving one except a few times ( 3 x / year ) strip and Autobahn. On Autobahn highspeed is about 110 to 130mph (~5500rpm) It is more a street car under more or less normal conditions. ;-)
 
Maybe I missed it, but what bellhousing are you going to use? The truck one you had behind the smallblock used an 143T truck flywheel (I thought), if you use the same bell and the 130T flywheel the starter wont engage the ring gear. You will need a 143T flywheel for the Hemi, wont you?
 
i googled M10 x 1. Is it true? (from a vendor)

hm, from a different site (someone who did the swap): 6.1L Hemi Flywheel Bolts: M10x1.25x35mm (8 req.)

I used that steel flywheel from Moparts that you mentioned on my build. I think I ended up getting the flywheel bolts from a truck engine since the car bolts weren't long enough. My engine was technically from a Charger, but apparently they didn't make stick shifts in 06 since the bolts weren't near long enough. The truck bolts fit fine though. I found my flywheel on Ebay for $100 off of the Moparts price and they had the aluminum ones for $100 off too I think. I actually have the part numbers for the flywheel bolts running around here somewhere, I can try to dig them up for you.
 
i'm using a 143 teeth wheel and a Dakota bell. I had the same on my 340.

Go to a Dodge dealer - the bolts are pretty cheap and in the correct lenght... ;-)

I have my flywheel now welded and re-drilled. But not balanced. I will see if it works. If not than I buy new from a member here... ;-)
