[SOLD] For Sale: 1969 340 carb to pan

1969 340, very late date, with everything pictured. Carb, intake, x-heads, pan. No exhaust manifold or air cleaner. Nothing that's not pictured.

ENGINE # EW340P28280195 (April 25, '69 assembly)
Block VIN # 9B355552 (1969 Hamtramck).

I was told this came from a Barracuda, but don't know if it was the original engine from it. I was also told that it's stock bore, but I have not had the heads off myself to check. The person I bought it from is a collector who is trustworthy (for what it's worth).

Intake # 3462848 (340-4 1970) - the engine being a late build, this could be the original intake, or maybe it's not original to the engine. The former seems more likely, but who knows.

$1200. Local pick up only in Milwaukee, though I could deliver locally (southern WI) or possibly to Rockford, IL area on certain dates as I travel there sometimes. Otherwise, PICK UP ONLY.

Might not be too bad for someone from the midwest looking to piece together a factory '69 340... here's most of it already. I have no plans to build or obtain a '69 340 car, so figured someone with one might be able to put it to better use.

Something's not right here....

The 69 model year ended in june of 69.

The block cast date is Aug 10, 69.

The 70 model year would have been launched late june of 69 or early july 69.


Are you sure that this is not a 70 model year engine and the vin is 0B355552 instead of 9B355552? Maybe the 0 looks like a 9 and isn't clear in the vin....

It doesn't make sense that the block was cast 2 months after the 70 model year started for it to be a 69 model...

something is a miss for sure the engine was assembled before it was cast. Not that it means a lot but the water pump and timing cover are 70 up.

OK, I checked it out just now actually.

The Block VIN # starting with 9B is definitely correct. It's clear as day.

The EW340P28280195 is definitely correct also. Very clear.

The one thing I'm not 100% certain about is the block casting date of 8-10-69. The one number that's only 99% clear is the 8. If it was a 3, the whole thing would make sense, right? But the thing is... I really don't think it's a 3, it really looks like an 8. I cleaned it off more, and unless there's something real weird going on, it's clearly 2 closed loops [8] vs open [3]. But that's the one thing that would make it make sense, if that casting date was actually March, then the engine assembled in April, for a '69 model year car.

? Any other ideas on what to look for here? Are we 100% certain about that 2828 build date being April 25, 69?

But one thing I can be 100, even 110% positive about is that VIN. It's 100% clear... 9B. So for now, let's assume that is correct and look at the rest more closely. I will put more time into this after work tonight.

I have the casting date cleaned off pretty good, but after work I'll take a copper brush to it real good and get to the bottom of this. Based on what I'm seeing right now with these numbers, that's the date that if I got it wrong would make the whole thing make sense, as far as I've been able to see so far. It's more likely if anything that I got the month wrong, than the year, based on what the shapes look like.

Makes no difference anyway , chance of finding the the orig car it came out of is Nill .I think it is a super buy, anybody that is close for sure , whether it being 68 to 71, just my opinion.

- I have no idea how many miles were on this, I didn't pull it, and I'm not sure how long it's been out.

"Generally" there is about +/- 6 months from cast to assembly. I have not seen a one month cast/build separation before. Not saying impossible just very unlikely.

I've seen a two week turnover from cast to build.

If it is a first time through block on the block machining line, it can be through in 1-2 days. As long as there is no/minimal "down time" on the block machining line.

Then it gets built on the engine assembly line in one shift. And then sent to the assembly plant.

Now if there are any "hiccups" in block machining or engine build, they can be put aside and take days, weeks, months to be "repaired/recycled" through the lines again.

It is a three stage process. It also depends on how "tight" they are running and how many parts/engines are in the "float/bank". If things go right, a block can be cast, machined, and assembled within a week of casting and then sent to the vehicle assembly plant. The engine machining/assembly plant usually runs two shifts, so the parts can run quickly through the system if things are running good.

OK guys, interesting discussion. Thanks. And thanks for translating that 2828 date code for me, I'll fix that in first post.

I've spent more time looking at the numbers. The casting date month really looks like "8", but you know how those always have extra iron around them? This has that too. And I can "almost" convince myself that the month says "3" due to that extra iron.

I think for now, this is the best I can do. I'm positive about all the other numbers, it's the only one with any ambiguity whatsoever, and it's the one that seems like if I'm reading it wrong, and it's really a "3", it all makes sense.

Anyone locally interested in it, is of course welcome to stop by and have a look themselves, we can inspect it, do whatever you want or need to do.
