I signed up on here a while back & have a couple of posts, but didn't realize that I should post something here. Been on Moparts & DC.com for years with the same user name, but like the A-Body only forum, it's great for the A-Body info.

I've had my 1971 Scamp since 1988 & have been slowly bringing it back to a presentable state. The house, family & everyday things make it a slow process. It's a car that I got lucky with, finding it by accident. I was hunting for a V8 car back in late '87 & couldn't find a decent one & ended up with a 6 cylinder Duster. The Duster was okay, but it didn't have the power I wanted for a daily driver & had a few issues.

One day I was going to this store & parked next to this very clean, bright yellow Scamp. I saw an older guy heading towards it & waited to see if it was his. It was, so I rolled the window down & told him the car looked really nice, & that you don't see too many in good shape anymore. He thanked me, then got in & started it up.

I knew right away it wasn't a slant 6 by the sound, & asked what was in it. He told me a 318, so I asked if he thought he would ever be interested in selling it. He surprised me & said, "Yes, I plan to sell something since I have too many things going on, & this car will probably be the one to go." I gave him my number, but he wrote his on the paper & said to call him if I really wanted it. After a couple of days I called, asked if I could go look at it & drive it.

He was really a Ford guy & had 2 1966 Mustangs, an early 50's Ford that I don't recall the model, a late model Econoline Van, a Fairmount Wagon, & an Escort his wife drove. He said he got the Scamp because it was in really nice shape, but I guess since he needed to get rid of something his heart wasn't into the only Mopar he had. He also said his niece wanted it, but that she was planning to commute into New York City to school & he said no way, it'll be ruined in less than a month & wanted someone that would take care of it to get it.

It's originally a 318-2V car with a 904 auto trans & 7-1/4" rear. When I got it, it had the original 42,000 miles on it & some minor scratches & dings. I had the engine redone with some HP parts & a 4V set up several years later when the timing chain let go. The trans was rebuilt, & I am in the process of doing a rear end swap to an 8-3/4" with a 3.23 sure grip. I had some rust repaired & had it repainted in the early 90's, but the vinyl top & interior are the originals. A set of 15x7 small bolt pattern rally wheels with P235 60's all around make it ride nice.

Nice score there !!! Good reliable transportation and good looks,it doesn't get any better than that !! :prayer:

Thanks for the welcome & compliments on the car.

One thing I just remembered is when I originally called about the car to go look at it, the directions led me to a house that was 2 blocks from where I lived. The guy turned out to be the father of a kid I knew from grammar school who was a year older than me, & a grade ahead. I had never seen the car prior to that day in front of the store. Small world. :D

Found this pic from when I still had my '68 Barracuda Convertible. The Barracuda was a slant 6 car that my friend & his son are restoring & planning to put a 318 in it.

Nice looking Scamp and a good story. Maybe we'll see you at the next E-Town event.

I'm dying to find out what it'll run with the new rear, so hopefully this year I will have a chance to bring it back to E-Town to find out. With the 7-1/4 & the 2.76 gears, it ran a 15.20 with open headers. I don't see why the 8-3/4 with a 3.23 sure grip can't get me into the high 14's. :dontknow:
