How do I know which size fuel cap I need for my 71 Dart Swinger. I've been told that there are 3 different diameters. How do I tell which I have, and how do I tell which cap is which? Thanks, RLL

Not sure about the diameters, but I'll share some info as a '71 owner.

'71 caps are '71 specific. Up to '70 is one type, '72 and up is another, but 71 is just '71. You probably won't find one at the local parts store (I couldn't), and most of the stuff on eBay, although sometimes advertised as fitting, usually won't. I have purchased several caps, returned a few less than I've purchased :angry7:, and finally bought one of those neat flip top adapters to put a Charger flip top on mine. I've also heard of people switching to later filler tubes to get around it.

Its not impossible, and maybe someone has come up with a source for them recently. But it might not be easy. Sorry!

Good luck! :-D

And welcome to FABO! Lets see some pictures of that '71!

I am interested in more info on what makes it a "71" only cap. :read2:

I had to modify my cap for my "72", but I didn't know why?

i have a cap on my 71 that does not rest completely horizontal, this looks wrong on mine due to the side stripe. i'm about to play with mine this week i have a different neck also to compare it with, the neck looks pop rivited in. How did you modify it Cheryl? Coming to Chicago soon? ...

I am not sure about the caps between the years and actually started a thread about this awhile ago, not much input though. Ended up taking the cap apart and slotting it from underneath. It's straight w/ the stripes now :-D. I'll PM you about a Chi-Town visit ;)

I could probaby take pictures of my 74 and my 71 in a day or so, but there are a couple of differences. Pretty sure the inner diameter of the filler changes slightly, and the depth of the flanges on the cap are different. The pre '71 cap hangs loosely in the filler of my '71. Beyond that, the 71 caps are vented differently.

Also, I believe th filler should be held in with screws. At least theyare with both of my '71's.

Here's a pic of a vented cap on the left (72 & up) and non-vented on the right (pre-72).

The vented cap can be modified by elongating the openings in the flat bracket. I am not sure what you could do to modify the earlier cap

'67-'69 50-state/Canada + '70 49-state is not too difficult to find.
Late '71 + '72-'76 is easy.
'70 California + early '71 50-state/Canada is the tough cap to find.

I am working on getting some of the tough-to-find caps made, but that's a long-term project. In the meantime, often the easiest and least costly way forward is to swap in a '72-up fuel filler pipe so as to be able to use the easy/cheap cap.
