Fuel/exhaust smell

My 65 Dart with 318 with 1406 electric choke suddenly has a strong fuel/exhaust smell when started and running. No fuel leaks any where that I can see. Checked pcv fitting going to carb, seems ok. Looked at breather on on other valve cover, seems ok, the filter/foam inside breather is quite dirty, would that cause smell? Car runs fine just smelly :( Can you clean that foam filter in breather? Would air cleaner be a issue, looks clean. Thanks

If it is a O.E. breather you can clean it with mineral spirits.Usually soak it in a can for a day then rinse it several times,air dry.
Do the same with the PCV valve. How about the hose for the PCV ? good shape ?
What type of air cleaner ? The O.E. or aftermarket ?
Do you have a breather that has a nipple on it and it connected to the air filter housing ?
 

Put a return filter on it after the mechanical fuel pump and run a return line to the tank. The ethanol fuel is boiling and the float is not working correct. I have seen this before . It will also start easier when warmed up after shutting it off.

Looks like the fuel pump is bad! Had fuel around the top of pump where it's flat like it's seeping thru. Only doing it on start up when it's cold then after it warms up, can't find it leaking any more. Go figure, well, new fuel pump that's a easy fix. Thanks for everyone's input!

Had that on a Slant car running down the road smelled gas. Shut it off, looked for leaks, nothing.Evaporation happened quick before I could see it.Started it up and there it was,leaking around the crimp. Glad you found it.

Just like you said, all around the crimp had gas on it. New one in, seems to be fine now
