Tryin to figure out my non working fuel gauge. Hooked ground up at sending unit and gauge moved. Added ground to sending unit because it was missing. Still nothing. Today I had the cluster out and noticed when the cluster wasn’t grounded to the dash with the head light switch on the fuel gauge would work. But as soon as I install the cluster to dash it doesn’t. What could be causing that?

The connectors to the circirt board might be making intermitnant connection. The headlight on issue is odd but you might be backfeeding a ground or the like

When all you did was ground the sending unit wire and gauge worked, you isolated the problem to the fuel sending unit. A very common item to fail.....either electrically, or a sunk float. Messing around in the dash may have added more problems, but, pull the sender and test it with an ohmmeter and/or see if the float is full of gasoline.
