i just put in a new sending unit in my 69 dart. gauge reads only "half full" no matter what the the fuel level is. does the sender need to be grounded? or should i look elsewhere? thanks for the help..

Needs a ground, the original was a strap but usually go missing.I soldered a
wire to the sender and attached to the frame.

If you replaced the sender you would have removed and hopefully reinstalled that ground strap. It snaps onto the metal fuel line completing the ground path over the rubber connecting hose. There is a ground path there now since the gauge needle does move.
