fuel pump swap help

hello, sorry if this sounds spazzy, im swapping my mechanical pump on my 440ci,the pushrod from the cam lobe pushes up so far,ive cranked the motor over by hand but there sill 3/4 inch showing,does the lever from pump go under rod as it seems to slide past when i offer the pump up, sorry if this sounds dumb!!!

When the rod is all the way up, there will still be a little tension on the pump arm. My recollection is that there is plenty of "play" to start the pump arm under the pushrod, and start the bolts in the pump mount.
