This may sound stupid but what is the best and most accurate way to calibrate a sending unit with the fuel gauge?I have never done this before and any help would be great,Thanks

I guess there are different ways to go about this. You could start with an MT tank, and bend/ adjust the sender to read on the MT mark. Then fill it so many gallons at a time to see what the gauge reads

I built myself the rough equivalent of the Ma sender substitution box, which gives you cold/ MT, 1/2 scale, and full/ hot readings when hooked in place of the senders. This checks that your gauges are correct. Sender resistances are same for temp/ fuel/ and optional oil

The big problem is that repop senders don't seem to have the proper resistance range of the originals.

I set mine by bending the sender and had to bend it a lot. I replaced the fuel tank at the same time (16 gallon) used a 5 gallon can and put 4 gallons in it bent sender to make a 1/4 tank on gauge.
If I were do it again I would use 6 gallons to the 1/4 mark. right now empty is empty and full reads full for awhile at 6 gallons you would split the difference and have a reserve of 2 gallons at empty.
in an a-body the sender goes into the rear about halfway mark and at 1/4 tank you can remove without spilling out the tank, at a 1/2 tank it will spill out. you could use water as a cheap substitute but need to make sure you get it out before adding gas.

Thanks everybody for all of your help and advice, turns out the sender was bad(thats what I get for ordering one from a local parts store)The gauge would read accurate from 1/2 tank up to full, but when the fuel level dropped below half a tank it would drop to empty.I decided to do order a high quality sender,if anybody has any suggestions I would really appreciate your input.I thought about year one, classic ind.
