Hi. I have a '74 Duster with a /6. There is a canister that I think is supposed to filter fumes from the gas tank then they go to the carb to be burned. If I removed the canister then plug the vacuume line to the carb. would I plug the line that goes to the gas tank or make it so the tank could vent thru the line? Thanks for the help.

Whats up with the canister? Is it all shot out? Are the hoses shot? The nice thing about the canister and purge system is it absorbs gas fumes which should help keep the car from smelling like fuel all the time. I would try to keep the canister system intact / refurbish it. I always hate taking someone for a ride and smelling fuel in the garage or inside the vehicle. I have pulled the canister from most of my vehicles and just cut the pipe off and smashed it about 90 % shut. But most my old vehicles smelled like fuel most of the time.
I cant answer your actual question though. My guess would be to cover the end of the tube with a little piece of microfiber cloth so it breathes w/o getting dust in it.

SSDan has some data here about the subject.

I took a chrome fuel filter and mounted it to the fire wall passanger side up high and ran the hose to that. Looks ok and funtional. Still vents the tank, no fuel ever comes out because it's higher than the tank.

Here you go, the system is pretty basic if you choose to get it up to speed.

It looks like slantsixdan described this pretty much to the T.

Also here is a good bit of data off the site below.

Not A -body but I would bet a couple cheeseburgers that it works the same.

Me too! Works fine and the tank is still vented.

Cut the line as high as it goes, back at the tank. Shove some of that plastic brillo pad in; delete the rest of the line. Re-tune carb.

Eliminating the vapor canister is a dumb idea, and I'm not sorry if that offends anyone who's done it, 'cause it's the truth: really dumb idea. This system works only for you, never against you. One of the best things it does for you is keep hold of $4/gal gasoline that would otherwise float off into the open air, so you get to actually use it to run your engine. Making hamfisted jerry-rig mods involving plastic brillo pads and chrome fuel filters (aHyuck!) is just plain dumb, not to mention the serious safety hazards it creates. Don't be a dillweed; fix the system properly. Info here and here and here and here.

i like the idea of keeping the canister but some carbs arent designed to work with it. when i had the thermoquad on my car, between the electronic bowl vent and charcoal canister, i got no gas fumes under the hood at all. the carb wasnt cooperating i had to swap it out for a holley, which you cant easily vent to the canister. i took a piece of fuel line welded it into a hole i drilled into the air cleaner base and connected the canister to that. the line goes over the primaries of the carb, i drilled a few holes in the tube so at least the fumes coming from the tank are vented inside of the air cleaner. it seemed to help some. i guess you could do something similar to connect the bowl vents to the canister too.
