I did the same thing with a gas cap from a 60s Ford pickup gas cap. I drilled out the rivet on the gas cap and had a perfect fit for my dart gas cap.

On my cap the old seal just pulled out over the center and then installed the new one. It's not riveted just tight around the bottom of the center where it indents in.

Oh ok, thanks. I've noticed a few small cracks on the outside edge of mine, so this info will come in handy.
I think the OE mopar caps capture the seal between the outer and inner parts. But as MRHP said the replacement will stretch enough to go over and seal tight around the inside of the gas cap.
Removing the old one was easy for me it was stiff and brittle and came off in 2 pieces
