72 swinger,318/904,currently putting together an 8 3/4 for it,and am debating between gear ratios.

I am trying to decide between 3.23 and 3.55 gears.

Currently a 318/904 (as stated above) but will eventually be running a 360/A-518 I want good performance without high revs at highway speeds,65-70mph(with the current set up)(this is a driver and I want to be able to travel around w/it)...

but want to have good (off the line/tire smokin grunt) performance when the A-518 is installed.

Whatta you guys think ??

With the coming OD I would go with the 3.55, better off the line and youll still be good for highway. I want to go with a 5 spd OD and Im going to run 3.55s

3.55's will be very good to do.

3.55 X .69 = 2.4495 as a final ratio (like the Jeep's.)
3.23 X .69 = 2.2287 as a final ratio

Thanks guys,I was leaning to the 3.55's but the 3.23's are much easier to find (as a unit /"chunk")

but they seem to go in 2-300rpm incriments,soI guess I'll have to figure my tire size and go from there.Looks like I could almost get away w/a 3.91 !!

Suregrip391: thanks,neat little tool there,helps out alot!

You also have to figure in the tire size when deciding on gears but if your going to use an o.d. trans you should be fine even with a short tire and 3.55's and possibly even 3.73's or 3.91's. Tire height makes alot of difference.
