68 Dart 340/727:66 Signet Vert 340/5spd: 68 D100
I’m thinking I’ll have a happy medium with my 340. 3.23 gears with 235/70/15 steelies.
2786 rpm at 70mph
2786 rpm at 70mph
I think that may be a little low, but it's not far off.Engine RPM Calculator | Spicer Parts
At 70mph with your tires and rear gear ratio
3690 RPM (Automatic)
3594 RPM (Manual)
My 70 Dart came with 3.91 sure grip.
I feel that driving it 70 mph for extended miles is asking a lot of my 340. I have the stock 14" wheels with 245/60-14 tires. My buddy works at NAPA in southern Indiana, and hes got a customer with a 69 roadrunner 383 with 3.91 sure grip that he drives on long hauls. But it's got 15" wheels.
Am I thinking correctly that the 15" wheels are changing things for him enough to allow better highway speeds?
I absolutely agree. My first overdrive was around 1984, and I wouldn't even consider owning a car without one since. I get a good laugh every weekend passing all the cars going to Island Dragway. 55mph, getting honked at, passed on both sides, and sounding like they are going to throw a rod. Honestly being a muscle car guy, I find it quite embarrassing. I fail to see the fun in driving a badass car that can't keep up with traffic. For me, I can't go down the road over 5 miles if my engine is turning 3000 rpm's to do 55 mph. I can't listen to it. Mine are automatics and people think your in 2nd gear "hey, you need to go to drive"......
I'd go 15 inch tires & then go with a 4:10 gear.
I just went to 3.91's from 3.55's. 3.55 gear was ok but will be swapping cam to the old skool 292 mopar cam so i think 3.91's are better suited for this cam.
