often thought but never tried.... and there lies the danger
machine the back off open diff side gears to make same dimension as the broken slip resistant side gear, put them and their pinion gears in and shim to get sure grip action
depends if you have a lathe and are willing to experiment
but as with a number of things i think about could all be impossible BS
obviously need to have the correct axle spline
could probably do it with the auburn style integral cone and side gear as well, take the toothy face off + some, make totally flat, put in a new gear with totally flat back and shim in between convert it to seperated cone and side gear
gear and cone ride on axle spline 1 part or 2 parts makes little difference.. if you are gonna twist that spline you will....
not worth it if you can get a clutch centre for $300 and you have no lathe and time.
but as i said earlier the cone set up is a good street and country road set up for all weathers...
if you are crossing shallow creeks and driving uncapped trails or sand swept highway, cheap and effective
if you are drag racing cheap and not very effective
although a million australians who shimmed theirs tight and went racing on a 7.8 inch diff (every car had one (mopar GM ford Nissan) (and junk yards full) and got really quite far, will disagree with me..real good quality product came out of their BorgWarner Axle plant even after BTR (british tyre and rubber) and the auditors/receivers took over..some of the centres were cast steel rather than nodular iron
the step up in australia is usually a ford 9 inch with its attendant weight and parasitic losses
enough of my rambling you are looking for a replacement...
