Getting nervous about cost of engine rebuild.

I don't want to sew seeds of discontent, but did you say $450 for the cam? That seems rather high to me. If that is any indication of his markup, you were right to be concerned.
Compare his prices to summit racing. You can almost buy two cam kits for $450

We just did a 340 . new pistons .030, new scat rods. new cam lifters and Adjustable rockers, New aluminum heads and intake. felpro set, water pump, true roller chain, Balance assembly, new damper. new distributor. new 750 Quick fuel carb. Complete motor with paint and brass core blugs and felpro head gaskets $8800 + $500 install. And that was everything new accept the block and crank and timing cover.
new milodon pan and hv72 pump.

That was drive the thumper away.Every part was bought through Summit Racing. We also did the engine compartment that was more. We have other members cars coming in when caught up with our own work.

New parts are cheaper than machining the old stuff. Heads , Rods etc.

I've got say that even with dyno time, $2K to assemble the engine sounds pretty steep. Last year I helped a friend assemble a 289 Ford engine to help him save the $500 the machine shop would have charged.

That looks great! Yall have some very good prices and I am sure the work is top shelf knowin you. I can tell yall ain't makin a bundle on the stuff. Just offering a good job at a fair price. Hell yeah!

That is it in a nut shell. Put my name on as many as I can before I go. If not with labor with parts

Parts and other ancillary nonsense aside, $500 is the usual going rate for assembly. Assembly generally means ready to fire. All measurements, clearances, degreed, primed, ect. For basic dyno time $500-$600 is normal. That includes set up and take down, break in, and basic tuning of the package. Longer, more expensive dyno sessions generally involve parts swapping, ect.

As one of the previous posters mentioned, machine work will probably be a bit higher for a Mopar. The factory tolerances we're awful, and they will probably have to touch every dimension of the block. Also most shops don't do Mopars daily so set up will take longer.

No-one seems to notice that the heads are also going to be ported. That's more shoptime (money) right there.
I wonder to what extent/level they are ported?
Balancing the crank-assembly takes up another bite of the budget.

Hydraulic roller. That is the price I saw for it online.

Better to buy heads than have your old one done. Until you do the seats , guides , Valves, springs for the new cam, retainers , and labor the cost is the same. That is without bowl blending or any porting. You can buy RPMs for the same price. They come ready to install. . Scat rods are cheaper than getting your old rods resized. A neutral balance crank don't cost that much. If you get $5000 into a used motor with all the old parts but the cam and lifters you got Taken big time. Get a invoice.
I had Ryan Shadey Dell do a motor for me. It came apart on start up. He charged me to CNC fly cut my Pistons $450. He used a drill and a file through my heads while it was assembled. His brother let the cat out of the bag by accident. He paid for a new motor and heads.

Most shops are in it for the money not the hobby. If you have them install a bigger cam than stock it is now a race motor no guarantee. They are your freind as long as the cash is flowing their way . Let something go wrong and then see how freindly they are. Watch your self and don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions and get everything they do described in detail on the reciept. All clearances and a build spec sheet. Its your motor and you need to know what was done for future reference for repair.

And the mopars are more money is a bull **** story. everyone pays the same. It goes by the number of cylinders and parts cost. labor is the same unless you getting screwed.

Heads are edelbrocks. They were untouched going to the engine builder. I think most of the money is going to be in the heads.

I have about $12,000 into my 418 but there are a lot of new parts and a lot of them are not the most inexpensive way to go. They only charged $450.00 for short block assembly and me and my buddy Larry put the rest together. Dyno time (because it was such a fiasco running back and forth for fittings for the FiTech and pretty much chewed up a whole day) was $500.00

$450 for a cam? And that's the only major new part? Did they forget new pistons, rings, bearings, oil pump, etc..., etc...?

Pistons are staying the same. Rings and bearings will be replaced as well as oil pump. The rotating assembly, heads, intake, carburetor, and distributor were provided by myself.

Im new to this whole thing but could you buy a similar engine for around 5k and just put it in?

Is this a numbers matching thing?

Not a numbers matching engine and yes I could probably buy one that is built by another member but then I’m not too sure who put it together. I could go with a crate motor but it wouldn’t make the power unless I went with a stroker and then it would be more expensive.

Ok i was just curious.

What numbers do you expect to be close to?

And at the end of the day you sigh, and say its my car, and I'm not going to leave the kids all that money.:D

Live today, tomorrow isn't promised. Have FUN!!!

Get a hold of our member at blue print engines (I forgot his handle since he moved from pace) and I bet he can get him a 408 for that kind of money

The one they advertise for that money has iron heads and is rated at 375.
