i want to get rid of my ammeter but i have 2 black wires on one side of the gauge and 2 red on the other side...do i still connect all them together?

or should i just run the power cable thats on the back of the Alt. directly to the starter relay to completely get rid of the ammeter?

Just make sure they're all connected and wrapped securely.
If it comes loose or touches anything electrical, you will have problems.

While i havent done this little "upgrade" yet myself, I think i read elsewhere that the idea is to keep the higher voltage wires (the ones to the ammeter) out of the bulkhead connector, as that is the "weak point" (if such a word can be used on a mopar) and can cause melting of wires and possibly fire. so re routing the wires to keep them under the hood, and out of the "cabin" might be a better option.

i think one of the wires feeds the fuse box, so they need to stay under the dash....

I was just going to post a link to the Diesel Truck Resource , Tech section, thread specific to this question, but here instead in the entire Electrical subsection. There is a ton of good information here, and while the specific part numbers may vary, the IDEAS and information will work just fine.

Ah, what the hell...check out the entire tech section, I know some of this information will apply to A bodies just as well as Dodge pickups. Make sure to save this one!

Of course, here's one of the best sources of information, and supplies for electrical work as well..MAD Electrical.

ok so what i did was took the black wire running from the alt and put it at the starter relay and i connected all 4 wires on the ammeter together on one side of the gauge...but the battery still wont charge.. I test it by starting the car and pulling the pos. cable off and the car dies. I do have an underdrive crank pulley also

I've never seen 4 wires on the amp gauge. I've seen 3 where a clock was added to certain models. Are all 4 wires original equipment ?

yes and i forgot i had msd hooked to my pos cable aka why the car dies when i pull it off hehe :)

In the mad electric diagrams, couldn't you just take the black wire that goes from the welded splice to the alternator, and run it to the starter relay with a fusible link on the end of it.
Then take a new wire and run it from the alternator to the starter relay, with a new fusible link.
Then take the black wire that went from the welded splice to the ammeter and get ride of it, along with the red wire from the ammeter.

I don't understand why they keep the red/black wires and splice them together.
They are already cutting into the harness, so why not make it less complicated.

I have a new harness so I want to keep it simple, will what I laid out work?

I also have an ammeter in a 3 gauge pod under the dash, and I might just run the wires there. Thoughts?
