what does this mean and do? how do you know what you should have all your timing in by? and how do you come about acheving this, use springs?

yeah, its done with springs in the distributor. to check it, plug your vacuum line if you're using it. using a timing light have someone rev up the motor and notice when the timing stops moving. get a tach reading and that will tell you where your timing is "all in".

The rate at which the timing comes in on a stock engine is pretty slow and is not optimal for performance. This is done because the manufacturers have to protect the engine against drivers that don't use the correct fuel, lug the engine, etc.

The overall performance is improved by having all the mechanical advance in at a lower rpm. Some where in the low 2000's to 3000 rpm is going to be optimal but the only way to dial it in is on a dyno or with many runs down the 1/4 mile. Short of doing that some where around 2500 rpm is going to have you in the ball park.

goto barnes and noble. auto zone or advanced auto and buy the new mopar enthisiast magazine.. in the back there is a very good article that explains it all to you....
