I bought a Chevy Aveo last year, and was tempted to buy something AWD,
but couldn't afford it at the time.

My '87 Dodge W150 needed complete exhaust, on it, {Rusty headers Bite}
and the fuel line was sucking air.

Then I noticed that at least 2 of the "frost" plugs were leaking coolant too.

I have had enough of working on rusty crappo.

I had to put a radiator, alt, battery, fuel line, tranny cooler lines,
all the brake lines, master cyl, rear shoes, wheel cyl.s etc...

Blah blah....

$4500 for the junker clunker! You betya.

Traded the 2008, Aveo, and the '87 Dodge W150 rusty,
for a Suzuki SX4 AWD crossover.

Yeah I hear ya, made in Japan.... :(

If it wasn't for the clunker deal I would not have been able to do the new car.

Too bad Dodge does not have an AWD car for aprox $17,000.

Anybody else able to make a good deal with cash for clunkers, before it stopped??

Here are 2 pics of the truck 3 years ago, and its gotten rrusty'errrr

I'm not going to fault you......out of the 400+ vehicles I've owned, Jap cars have been the best. If I could get $3,500 CASH for the Powerwagon, I'd junk it. Sad; but who else is gonna pay that much for a rusty 50 year old truck?

They do, you can get the Caliber in AWD. Or the Jeep Patriot.

That sends a chill down my spine, grew up in WI and left in 91 to sunny CA. I saw enough rusty cars and like Mikey, I've owned over 400 cars and now I see rust and run (unless it's super rare).

This is the undeside of my 74 Duster, I was working under her the other day and i rubbed a bunch of the surface rust off with my hand. Note the original exhaust system still under a 74. Gotta love the dry climate for that. It costs me a small fortune to have green grass but my car is clean. :-D

I had a couple (rusty) Subaru's back in the day and they had indistructable engines, enjoy the car caveman.

I would! Too bad I'm in Canada and poor. But don't junk it!

i am glad it helped you out. i truley am but i am glad that deal quit lol. i hate seeing the old cars even rusty ones get junked. o well:) i really wanted to get a old insight and tune it to bad mpgs then take it to dodge and trade for a new diesel that gets just enough better mpgs lol lol piss off the tree huggers lol. congrats on the aveo man

We got a new car today with the cash for clunkers. We bought a Ford Escape today. The car that we got rid of was our 2000 Dodge Durango. It had 190K miles on it and would require around 2K to get it through inspection in September. Car was probably only worth 1K on a good day.

My parents got in on it too. They traded off their 96 gmc jimmy that was needing a bunch of work and the mileage was getting worse and worse even with tune up etc. So they bought their very first new car ever an 09 Caliber sxt sport I gotta admit I like that little caliber.

I hope the program does not start up again. Imagine what our hobby would be like if they'd had the program in the '70's during the first gas crunch. Don't think it would be easy finding that fender off a 4-door dart in a junk yard for your project. These cars that are traded in cannot be resold as parts. The program even details how the dealership should permanently destroy a good running engine in a 'clunker.'

I didn't see the Caliber in AWD on the dodge website.

Journey has it....

DO they get 25+ mpg with 4 people in the car and luggage in the back for a roadtrip? Our SX4 did.

Oh and good job buying the suzuki SX4.... a lot of people may find this useless information but the SX4 is based off of a fiat... *cough*

Thanks for helping the facist gov't ratchet us all closer to their endgame.

I'd torch that truck before I would take that "clunker cash", which, by the way, was stolen from your fellow taxpayers.

Guaranteed, if nothing changes in Washington in the next 4 years, this website is going to be dedicated to "remembering when" we were allowed to have our old cars.

That is, when the windmills are turning fast enough to power the computers.

:stop: Keep it in the politics forum, that's what it's there for!

A Caliber? I'm gagging on that one. I was given one as a loaner when my '05 Grand Caravan was at the dealer for warranty work last year. Oh sure it went like stink, but it felt like I was driving a coffin! Felt really weird.

Good luck with your new Suzuki. Back in '91 my first new car was a Suzuki Swift 2 door hatchback, 4 cylinder, 5-speed stick. I was doing courier work at the time and wanted a fuel sipper. I got 505,000 kilometers out of it before it got totalled. I showed it no mercy. One tough little econo-box.

I agree with Hemifish, I can't trade in my Neon since it gets 29/40 mpg! no American company makes a car equal to my 1998 5spd. And forget hybrids that new prius get 40 mpgs, less than an 1987 CR-X. Technology huh, go figure. Plus think about the fact that it means less spare parts for people who need to fix their "clunkers", they seize the engines and scrap the car. No more car recyclers or 'junk yards' where you can find parts for your older car, especially lower income people who cannot afford brand new cars. I'd love a new van since I have 3 kids, no way I am putting them in a smart car or tiny little import pos.

sorry cash for clunkers flat pisses me off. New home building is almost zilch so theres no way i can go in debt but i have to sit and watch the socialist president give my tax money away.I sent this to my tx. senator today. If you are a supporter of cash for clunkers you will not recieve any support from me in the future. There are too many ramifications to this program. I feel it is a plot to trap the lower middle class into using public transportation. When the rebate program slows whats next? Carbon tax on older cars. Ive never contacted my tx. representatives before but now they will all hear from me. Housing in Tx. is slower than I have seen it in years and I for one wouldnt be able to afford another bill (car payment). Being fiscally responsible isnt in style though so I guess the public will get in debt and default on all these new cars they cant afford and the banks can melt down again just like Fannie and Freddie caused in housing. Anyone supporting the mass giveaway of my country will Not be recieving my vote next election. Stand up and do the right thing. Sincerely,Bobby Michael

Yea, they do. I drove an R/T awd around for a while and it was a nice driving little car.

This is not entirely true; they do run the engines with sodium silicate in the crankcase until they seize, but then they go to a junkyard where they are allowed to be parted out....as long as the engine is removed.

All the cars that I saw had the engines seized and then were sent to the crusher for recycling... couple me wrong though I suppose

most places are grinding them into corn flakes. theyre not worth keeping to them without a drivetrain

I agree with daredevil! Screw that cash for clunkers crap! I would like my son to be able to still enjoy this hobby when he is my age but not if they keep crap like this up.

Most all the salvage yards around here are refusing to take the "clunkers" cause they say they make most of thier money off big sales like engines they can sell 50 $10 parts or one $500 part and spend less time removing the engine. So the dealers here are getting backed up with cars nobody wants.

I'd love to get rid of my wifes '99 Intrepid. They tell me it gets to good of milage. They don't drive it. BS. They rate it an average of 19mpg That was a lie then and now. it get 17.4 all weak long. I guess no new Challenger for me . I will just pay my taxes for the next guy.
