I have a 78 440 truck block I'm changing the cam and heads on. I know in order to us a neutral balanced torque converter I need to get a get an external balanced flex plate. Now to the other end of the crank, the dampener. Do I need to get a special dampener and if so anyone have any recommendations?

What Marco and Moper said. Another way to look at it: it is an externally balanced (OE) eng with the required (EB) pieces on it (dampener-front/TC-rear). You are changing the TC but not the way it is balanced so you just need to return the rear side back to the correct EB weight by subbing in the special flexplate to in effect make the neutral TC you are adding an externally balanced unit . Front stays the same as it was

Sounds good to me. Just didnt know if it was a wear item. This is a motor that has been sitting outside for years.

I've substituted the huge 440 damper with the much lighter 400 cast crank one many times with no issues. Might want to look into that.
