Ever ran a HP comparison between the X heads and the Magnum heads on the same small block to see what the numbers turn up?

I've heard from a respected engine builder that magnum heads can flow better than X heads with a good porting job. Apparently he prefers the swirl port head over X heads. I have X heads and am quite happy with them. Good question, it would be interesting to see the dyno numbers if someone has done the comparison.

my x headed 360 runs great but i have heard from several sources the newer designed heads are superior. why mess with 40 year old iron when you can get new aluminum is pretty much what iv been hearing

Im not sure. But as far as why mess with 40 year old heads when you can have new aluminum heads. My buddy did a home port job on his J heads for his stroker build and got 270 CFM,fully preped and set up for under a grand. He is not a pro, just builds engines as a hobby.I would love to see someone find any aluminum heads for that price.Let alone ones that can flow 270! Not to mention Iron is better for a street car. To me why spend 2grand+ When 40 year old heads can be made to flow just as well or better for less cash. My .02

There's plenty to read about these heads on the net. Seem like an excellent bang for the buck if you're planning to go modern. Check these out.

making me think of sending my x's over to shady dell.....

The Magnums have the biggest edge in low- and mid-lift flow. They also have the more efficient closed chambers. So they are much better for street engines with mid-lift cams, but as far as all-out flow goes they aren't much better than X or J heads.

Cast J or X head last longer the aluminum.
Also, keep in mind, magnum heads are know to crack between the valves do to the thickness of the ports is to tin.

The EQ heads are cast thicker between the valves to cure the cracking problem. They also are cast with more nickel in them and are a lot harder than old cast heads.

I see those heads take different valve covers. Does everything fit? Manifolds?

The valve covers can be the magnum or the la style. They both fit. But the exhaust manifolds are a different story. The 273-318 exhaust manifolds bolt on and seal tight. The 340-360 manifolds bolt on fine, but leak out the bottom of the head port, due to the taller exhaust port on the manifold.

The Magnums are better at certain things... they flow fast, but not record numbers... On getting 270 from a set of Xs with home porting, the bench wasnt right or he's tellign stories. Not without welding or epoxying can that be done. Magnums are a very good mild to medium performance head, expecially in the EQ versions that take LA manifolding and do not have cracking issues. The issue comes tryign to get bigger cams into a magnum headed engine. They get expensive to put a real cam in. So it becomes cheaper to use the LA version aftermarket aluminums and port as needed.

Well seeing how he is a close personal friend, and I have seen the flow chart, and the heads,I am going to disagree with you! J Heads Made 270 @ .500

I'm not familiar with the EQ heads but if the exhaust don't line up with headers, they most likely won't line up with manifolds correctly either. I will be using headers so that is a big problem. I guess these are a shot at improving some of the short comings of the J/X heads but what do you do about the header problem? The J/X heads are known for going flat at over .510 lift. EQ's?
