How tires are made?

its amazing how much goes into it.....we see them everyday but who ever thinks about how they are made.

And the history is pretty interesting going back to 1900 with Harvey Firestone who was a relative to Henry Ford.

When I wonder about something I always Google it first so I don't sound silly if/when I post the question. If I find the answer then I don't post it.

Rani,
Old people may remember that retreads used to be very common. At least I remember them. My father always ran recapped tires on our used cars growing up. It saved money over new tires.
I also remember that tire stores had a machine that they would "true" tires on. It would shave rubber off the tread to make the tire perfectly round. What ever happened to those?
I wish that tires didn't degrade over time. Those of us that have multiple vehicles have to (now?) be concerned with the tires on our undriven cars lasting only 4 years. Or they age crack.
Is that something new that tire manufactures have dreamed up to make me buy new tires or has that always been the case? It is what it is.
I'm not going to buy new ones anyway unless I see problems with the old ones.

It's amazing that tires don't cost 1000 bucks a piece.

...sure! I wonder, and most the time when I do I wind up........lost! LOL

I however do ponder a lot lately!

I worked at a tire company for 15 years so I don't wonder, pretty interesting stuff. Amazing how many name brand tires that are not made here in the USA anymore.....stay away from tires made in China.....

Did you know Henry Ford owned his own rubber plant? It kept his costs down in production

Keith, Henry Ford owning his own "Rubber plant" sounds so BAD coming from you. kept his costs down, SO Mr. Ford himself was playing a race car driver. and burning 4 rubbers a night?

....sure kept his costs down, I guess too at that rate! :D

One of my wife's sisters worked in a goodyear plant for about 3 months.
Would have made 65K entry, but apparently couldn't hack it.
I don't think she's held a job for any length of time anyway.
I don't think I could do that 8/40/52 either.

I also wish degradation wasn't an issue.
My new wagon has a matching set of awesome, period correct, bias ply white letter "Indy Profile" tires on it.

Brazil with Monty Python’s Michael Palin was just on, and they had a segment about the ford owned rubber plantation.
