I recently bought a 71 dodge dart, been sitting, its over charging the battery my volt gauge is pegging out. should this have a one wire alternator ?. it has a 2 wire, somebody added a wire from one of the fields of alt to a blue wire from the regulator to the fire wall. I disconnected it and now its not charging at all. any help would be help full . thanks mike

First thing to do is find out if it's wiring or voltage regulator

Hook up as normal, and start and run the engine. Pull the connector off at the VR and see if the charging stops. If so, wiring is probably OK

Remove, scrape clean the VR and remount. IT MUST BE grounded. MUST

Explain your voltmeter. Factory cars have a dash ammeter.

1971 was around the year they changed to a 2 field wire alternator. Either will work if wired to match the Vreg. Post photos of your alternator and Vreg. Where does the 2nd field wire go?
