Good that the problem went away, and maybe you did something to fix it. Cars are like that.

My point on the PCV is that even a few drops of oil getting sucked thru the PCV valve into the intake can make clouds of smoke. Aftermarket valve covers can cause problems since many don't have a baffle under the PCV port to block flinging oil drops. One needs to get the correct rubber insert that has a built-in baffle, and of course rubber degrades over time.
