I just bought a 72 scamp and it was advertised as numbers matching, it has the right 318 motor, wrong rear end, it has 727 tranny. I can't Check the numbers without taking off an after market shifter bracket. I have read in several places that it came with a 904 tranny, is the true?

The 904 was the standard trans used in all general purpose A-bodies. The 727 was optional for taxi's and Police cars so I imagine if someone wanted a 727 they could have ordered it as an option. But why does it matter that much? Don't mean to demean your Scamp but a 318 scamp isn't going to be worth any more if it is matching #'s. Their not a performance car like a 70 HemiCuda where it'd matter much
