I am hoping I can get some help on what I am told may be a Dana 44 differential which is currently installed in a 56 Ford F100 and I have no history on the build. My attempts to identify on line have been unsuccessful, but I did learn that Mopar did use Dana's with 2.76 ratios, so maybe the donor was a Mopar somewhere along the line? I am beginning to think it might be a Chrysler 7.25 inch as the cover has 9 bolts, not 10 and from what I have learned, the Chrysler was made with both 9 and 10 bolt. The numbers 3723675 are cast at the upper rear on the driver side and 23258 or maybe it's 28258 appear at the upper passenger side. Two metal tags are at the bottom, one read 2.76 and next to that is a tag with 2016. Maybe someone has a guide that can decode these numbers? Thanks VERY much for any help you can offer. I would like to add posi-traction to this differential so any advice on that would be a definite bonus. Thanks again.

I is darn sure not a 44. Kinda does look like a Mopar 7 1/4 but ?? I looked at a Ferd 7 1/2 and it's not "right" either

Tell ya, tho.........if that thing is either one, in other words "that small" it sure does not belong under a Ford pu. I'd look for something better

Yup. 7 1/4. As to them being "junk", consider how many millions were put under cars. Now consider how many you've actually SEEN with your own eyes broken. They aren't THAT bad. You just need to realize they aren't made for snatching around and doing stupid stuff with.

Hey thanks everyone, I really do appreciate you guys taking the time to respond. I’m damn near 70 and my days of burning up anything that is mostly rubber are behind me, although oddly enough, I could better afford to do so now than back when it was a more common occurrence. That’s a long way of responding to RustyRatRod’s post about “doing stupid stuff”. It remains to be seen if the existing differential is deserving (or capable) of an upgrade to posi-traction. More research is needed on that! Thanks again everyone!

Ya know, the picture of the 7 1/4 Mopar isn’t exactly a match to the actual picture, but it’s darn close. I tend to agree the truck will have to be gently used if that current diff stays.

99.9999% sure its the same. Here's my 7.25" stock in a 69 Barracuda 318 904. Mine is part# 2070051 maybe slight differences but otherwise the same. If you change out the rear you will most likely have to modify the drive shaft. Run it till it breaks which my not be in this lifetime.
