NEW DELHI — Ravi Shankar, the sitar playing virtuoso who became a musical icon of the 1960s after hanging out with the Beatles and who introduced traditional Indian ragas to Western audiences while playing for eight decades has died at the age of 92. His death was confirmed by the prime minister’s office calling him a “national treasure.”
George Harrison of the Beatles, called him “the godfather of world music” and drew major inspiration from Shankar, who helped millions of classical, jazz and rock lovers discover the centuries-old traditions of Indian music.
He also pioneered the concept of the rock benefit with the 1971 Concert For Bangladesh. To later generations, he was known as the estranged father of popular American singer Norah Jones. Also in 1971, moved by the plight of millions of refugees fleeing into India to escape the war in Bangladesh, Shankar reached out to Harrison to see what they could do to help.

Memory lane right there .....my parents made me play the sitar...so i had to sit there and listen to Ravi Shankar and trust me no kid wants to listen to that. LOL ....but he is a legend bcoz he is so well known in two worlds which not a common thing ....there are others like him but they never crossed into "the other world" to want to work with the british makes him a saint.....bcoz most Indians will refuse to work with the british.

He did a good thing for the Bangladeshi ppl ...i lived in Kolkata, India myself and you can still see the scars from that mess........it really is a shame ppl have to be like that.

Rest in peace to a legend

Know of his work, with the Beatles.Excellent musician.Wish his soul ,the best.

I guess you have to be of a certain age to understand the contributions of this very talented man. I feel the same sadness when I heard the news that Levon Helm died. A very good friend whom I fish with, had a puzzled look on his face when I mentioned the death of Levon Helm, while we were on our way to a tournament. I just assumed everyone knew who he was, I suppose its a generational thing !

An aside, the gorgeous, the talented Norah Jones is his daughter
