My friend has a '72 Dart with a 225 and 1 bbl Holly carb. There are two problems. One, it has a hesitation when applying gas from a dead stop, and you can't push too hard on the pedal or it will stall, and the other is the car's only getting around 10 mpg, and we know it should be better then that. It other wise runs well. The carb has been rebuilt. What adjustments, or what things can we look at to solve these problems? Thanks

The carb was rebuilt when and by whom? 10mpg is REALLY poor! Are you sure there are no leaks?

Sounds like it needs to rebuilt again. It's likely the accelerator pump isn't working right on your hesitation problem. That's easy enough to check with the carb still on the car. With the engine off, pull the air cleaner off and look down the throat of the carb and work the throttle linkage. There should be a squirt of fuel each time you open the throttle. Other trouble areas on that 1920 carb are the metering block, float, leaks, and adjustments. If you're only getting 10MPG, it's either running real rich or you have some tune up problems such as retarded timing, missing, or bad compression in one or more cylinders.

For the hesitation : Make sure your vacuum advance is hooked up correctly.
For the gas mpg : Check your plugs to see if the are fuel fouled, check your brakes for adjustment, and make sure the flapper valve in the exhaust is not stuck shut.
