homeade checking lifter

i bought a extra lifter with my new cam and lifters as i want to make a checking lifter for piston to valve clearance ,....................my question is where the pushrod sits in the cup in the lifter it moves up and down 3/4 mm,do i weld it when its towards the bottom of the lifter or when its up against the retaining spring at the top of the lifter,is that 3 mm play what pumps up when the engines running????????????????

take it apart and put a rod in it to make it solid.

Take it apart and put the guts of it in backwards(without the spring)....Made many solid lifters for pushrod measurement and valve to piston clearance.

That will do it.
Or fill it with JB weld or washers or anything else that won't give.

Do you have adjustable rockers? If not, you will need an adjustable pushrod to zero out the lash with your solid lifter when checking PTV clearance.
