Be aware that your original is likely made of asbestos fibers so do not inhale the fibers. Wear a mask and wetting it down with water while removing it might be a good idea.
 
Think about it from this standpoint, in 1963 asbestos was cheap and very widely used. It is lightweight and fireproof. It can be made in a very similar manner to fiberglass and visually they are very similar. I don't know for certain what it was made from originally, but I would take precautions just to be safe.

And there is medical concern over just plain fiberglass insulation and the risks from fiber insulations also, so even if it is "just" fiberglass you should still use precautions.
