Got the old one out, but don't want to mess up the new one.....
Should I just keep tapping on it or...?????

Lay a 2x4 across for an "even hit", and softly tap it in using a rubber hammer.

Put a small amount of grease on the rubber lip of the seal before you assemble the harmonic balancer to the engine.

The main trick is to get the whole seal started into the hole; once started fairly evenly, it can be tapped down evenly all around.

I use a socket that is the same size of the seal and then I put some oil around the inside of the rubber seal before installing the harmonic balancer.

For my 318, I put the timing cover in the oven at 250 (I used my welding gloves to carry it around, if you use the wife's oven mitts, be prepared to suffer) if I remember right, and the seal in the freezer for about 15-20 minutes. Then I tapped it in with a block of wood and hammer. It went in evenly and quite readily.
