How do you tell a 904 from a 999 externally

How do you to tell the difference from a 904 to a 999 - 998 externally by just looking at them lying on the floor, or is this not possible with out a tear down?

there is a part number stamped on the rail just where the pan bolts on to the trans on the driver side...

very simple,go to the right side of the tranny and look for the 17 digit code on the oil pan rail.Starts with a PP/PK and then a 7 digit code,then 2 four digit codes.Once you have the numbers check on our site in the tool reference section of : www.mymopar.com and cross refence the number to ID the applacation.mrmopartech

That is a A999 Lock-Up transmission
