How often do you replace your laptop computer?

Oddly, it seems that mine has sped up a bit.
The wife says that some can be sensitive to internet traffic and that it may not load pages as fast as a more powerful computer could when the internet traffic is high.

It's Win-Rot, the Windows' program slowly gets deteriorated over time. Reinstalling the operation system will help, and having a solid-state drive is really a big plus.
A format/reinstall will help because it gets rid of all the crap built up and fixes any issues that Windows may have gotten over the years. And a SS drive is a great way to speed things up if you dont have one already
Store your pictures on a thumb drive via USB port or if your laptop has a burner store your pictures on a disc.
Having a good antivirus program like PCmatic is a must have.
Very good advice, back your **** up and have a good antivirus program. Ive lost precious stuff because I didnt take my own advice and didnt have it backed up.
It really doesn't deteriorate, it just get's plugged up and slow with other programs that boot and run with Windows. If you know what you are doing, you can delete those programs. It's like a reset on your phone. It starts at the beginning with a fresh clean OS.
Mike is correct, Windows doesnt deteriorate, but your system does get clogged up with junk that WILL slow down your overall performance
If you read that article, it describes Windows Rot as NOT a deterioration of the Windows program, but rather a need for regular maintenance on your system as a whole.
That being said, Windows CAN get corrupt due to user issues, and a reinstall will fix that of course.

@Kern Dog , you are getting alot of good high tech info, but to answer your original question, there is no set time to replace your laptop, a good cleaning of built up system junk will help alot, but if you are not knowledgeable enough to do a thorough cleaning of it, take it to someone you trust who can, chances are it will run alot better after. BUT, if it is too old and it cannot run newer programs that you want to use, then you want to think about replacing it, or updating software, usually replacing is the easier way to go.
Back your **** up onto an external hard drive before doing anything!!

The one that I use is a Hewlett Packard and about 4 years old. Restarts don't seem to help, clearing cookies doesn't either. The wife thinks that laptops wear out and need periodic replacement and since she works for a software corporation, I would tend to believe that.
Being a car guy though, I look at symptoms and try to make sense of it.
It sometimes freezes when I'm checking email. One other car forum I'm on is really slow to load. Clicking on threads, loading pictures, back click functions are really slow.
The FABO/FBBO sites are usually fine but lately even here it acts up a bit.
Everything was fine for years but over the past few months, there are two sites that started to act slow when I accessed them, now others seem to be slowly heading the same way.
I don't like replacing things that can be fixed. How do you know when your computer is ready to replace?
4 years old isn’t ancient. In the search bar at the bottom of the screen type in ‘start up items’ this should bring up a list of all the programmes that open as soon as you try to turn on your machine. It’s amazing how many of these are installed by anything from printers to programmes that you install and they chew up a lot of resources without you even knowing. You should be able in ‘Start up items’ to be able to turn off these programmes from automatically starting it should speed things up.

I'm still happy that whatever slowdowns and hiccups I was dealing with have subsided. This laptop has been back to normal without any changes on my part. I find that weird.

Computers are very and inexplicably weird, I built myself an absolute beast of a machine for my 3d CAD work, it has been totally unpredictable since day 1. Sometimes it starts up in less than 10 seconds sometimes it takes 10 minutes because it decides it has to do full memory checking. Most times it wakes from sleep instantly sometimes it goes into a crippling death spin. No logic, no apparent cause, no apparent solution. So I make sure I have no hammers in my office.

A very smart IT friend of mine told me years ago not to let my computer go to sleep, but rather shut it down totally at the end of the day if having it on is not a necessity, he said they are mechanical beasts and they need a break from running all the time. Try doing that and see if it helps, thats what I do and my systems have always ran fairly stable. I do the same with my phone, I leave it on overnight just in case of emergencies and do a fresh restart every morning.
On the other end of the spectrum, I absolutely get making sure there are no hammers in the office :D
