How do I change the mechanical advance on this 440 Source distributor? I understand how to change the springs. But it’s set at 14 and I need 19-20 mechanical advance.

Nevermind I see. Have to pop the relector off then change the weights it looks like. That’s a PIA compared to the Mopar Performance dist I have.

Hoping the tune shop has those weights when I bring it in Monday.

I believe it depends on which model. Often they are a copy of something else so you can use parts from whatever they copied. Springs usually change the advance curve and offset advance limit bushings change mechanical advance or bending tabs if it doesn't have bushings.

See the circled tab. There's one on the other side. You bend these to limit the amount of the throw on the weights, thereby decreasing or increasing the mechanical timing. Kinda chinsey if you ask me, but that's how it's done.

Beats welding up the slots…still trial and error though

I tell you how I'd do it if I JUST HAD to run that distributor. I'd drill and tap each tab and use a long allen headed set screw with a lock nut on it to adjust the mechanical advance. .........but then, I wouldn't use that distributor. LOL

Springs and weights are about "timing of events", not mechanical advance. You need to alter the total movement as RRR alluded to.

Ya good idea. $100 440 Source distributor. Get what you pay for I guess. MSD ready to run looking real good right now!

Well since you have it OUT and APART, you can get it exactly where you want it. That's certainly what I'd do. You said you need 14, right? Then just limit the distributor to 7 degrees and there you go. You can use a school protractor and get it dead perfect.
