how to i figure my gear ratio

i got a 8 1 /4 with supposedly 3.91 gear how can i prove this to be true or otherwise?

There will either be a tag on your housing (not sure which year that started) or it will say 3.91 on the gears themselves.

jack up the rear end, mark the driveshaft, count how many times it turns with one rotation of the rear wheel.

Like jeh said and if it is a 391 it will be real close to 4 turns of the drive shaft. Real easy to find what you have there that way. Tom
