How to Repair/Weld a Crankshaft Main Journal (video)

-
I had a friend, Mark Hillenburg, who was a certified welder. He would take a big block crank and weld onto the main journals. He was also a machinist, so he would build up the mains then re-cut/grind the mains to produce a custom made, bad @ss, stroker crank. He's been doing this since the 80s. He also built drag car frames (funny car) and get them certified. He used the stroker cranks in his car and ran 1/4 mile somewhere in the 8s (back in the 80s).

These guys look like they use sand as a coolant! One of my Z1R TC's, I had the crank pins welded in Edmonton years ago and the procedure used water as a coolant.

I was wondering if the sand kept welding slag (burrs) of the main also.

The sand is flux, same principle as coated stick welding rod. This might be classed as "submerged arc" welding

That's correct, the machinist in the video explained the sand serves the same purpose as the coating (flux?) on the welding rods.
